A thousand years ago, inspired by these very principles, a group of us had a project plan for something we called "Trimtab Labs."
The tagline was: Levers for Livingry
And beneath that, "(Oh, yes, we can turn this ship around.)"
Of course, at the time, no one understood what in the world we were going on about.
Another Buckyism that continues to inspire me is *omniconsiderate*. So rich, that one. I love that in order to convey meanings that could otherwise be misconstrued, he invented his own words. (A skill worth reviving, eh?)
And, in the name of not reinventing the wheel, ancient wisdom and languages can offer us some useful terminology as well, as long as we can get their nuances. To wit: just like ubuntu has made its way into some sectors of modernity outside of Africa, perhaps mweria can do the same.
Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful post. 🙏🏽
Thanks! I love how certain words resonate. Sometimes it is the simplest concept like showing consideration to everyone (omniconsiderate) that get re-worded in every language and teaching.
The actions and protocols I see that show the most promise in livingry seem to be pre-lingual. Pooling of intention and deep commitments as done in Mweria isn't something that was invented with a word - it was expressed and grew through giving words to [it].
And therein lies the nuance—moving from the conceptual to the embodied, just as you say. Words can indeed be the water for a seed that was already in the soil (and, arguably, always was). Let us move from imagined threat to felt/experienced belonging. Let us move from weaponising everything to inviting the blessings of life to live through us. We (those of us who have allowed ourselves to be deeply shamed, blamed and disconnected by cultural narratives, and unwittingly bought into those stories) have much to release, remember, and reclaim. Now is the time. And... it can all happen in a heartbeat.
Thank you so much for your good work, and your good words. 🙏🏽
One Livingry System
What a beautiful read, thank you 😊 🙏
I love how you connected his concepts of livingry and anticipatory design with today’s decentralized systems like the Sarafu Network.
I am from Tanzania, which is a neighbor to Kenya and I hope we soon get something similar to the sarafu network.
Yes, yes, YES, Will!
