In the speculative realm of the quantum nature of time, we can explore intriguing concepts such as entanglement and communication between different temporal states. While these ideas remain speculative, they — along with other meditation techniques — have inspired a contemplative practice that I have done most of my life which I call Continuum. I try to do it often but generally remember to do it when I am feeling stressed, pain and occasionally joy. I hope this helps you as it has me.
In this meditation practice, we will be taking a brief and precious moment to engage in sending and receiving love to and from our past and future selves, allowing us to cultivate a deeper sense of self, care, connection and compassion across time.
Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can sit or lie down without distractions. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, allowing yourself to relax and settle into the present moment.
1. Present: Begin by bringing your attention to the present moment and the sensations in your body. Feel the gentle rise and fall of your breath, the contact of your body with the support beneath you, and any other physical sensations that arise. Allow yourself to fully arrive in the present moment.
2. Present to Past: Now, envision your past self. Imagine a specific moment in your past when you may have needed love, support, or understanding. Hold that past self in your mind’s eye with compassion and empathy. Feel the warmth and love within your heart center, and intentionally direct that love towards your past self. Visualize a stream of love and healing energy flowing from your heart towards your past self, enveloping them in a comforting embrace.
3. Past to Present: As you continue to send love to your past self, reflect on the successes, challenges and experiences they faced. Acknowledge your strength and resilience, recognizing that your journey has led you to this present moment. Allow gratitude and appreciation to arise for the lessons learned and growth experienced along the way. That past self is another form of yourself and still exists in some form. This past self has done their best to bring you to where you are. Remember a moment where your past self thought about the future (you) and sent you love and support — if you can’t remember this — then you will eventually as you keep doing this practice throughout your life.
4. Present: Come back to the present and feel the connection to your past self or selves. Hold a feeling as if you are a team moving through life together. Imagine a glowing thread connecting you and your past self and take a few breaths.
5. Present to Future: Extend your focus to your future self. Visualize yourself at a future point in time, perhaps a moment where you desire guidance, love, or support. Imagine a stream of love and positive energy flowing from your present self to towards your future self, providing encouragement, strength, and reassurance. See this stream as a thread from your past through your present self and into the future. You are making a commitment to do your best to care for your future self.
6. Future to Present: Connect with the potential within you and the wisdom that awaits. Open yourself to receive the gratitude, love and wisdom from your future self. Allow the stream of energy to wash over you, permeating every cell of your being. Embrace the sense of connection and guidance from your future self, knowing that it is a manifestation of your own inner wisdom and potential.
7. Past Present Future: Take a few moments to bask in the reciprocal exchange of love between your past, present, and future selves. Allow the energy of love to nourish and heal any aspects of your being that need it the most. Feel the interconnectedness of your self as a continuum, transcending the illusion of linear time.
8. Present: When you’re ready to conclude the practice, take a few deep breaths and gradually bring your awareness back to the present moment. Gently wiggle your fingers and toes, and when you’re ready, open your eyes.
Remember, this meditation is intended to cultivate a sense of connection, compassion, and love across time. It allows you to tap into the resilience and wisdom of your past self while nurturing the potential and guidance of your future self. Embrace this practice as an opportunity to explore your relationship with time and to deepen your self-compassion and understanding. With each session throughout your life, recall that the love you are presently giving and receiving is the culmination of the love your past and future selves send to you.
Embrace the profound realization that the love and compassion you cultivate in this practice are not confined to a singular moment but are threads that weave through the tapestry of your existence and all life around you.
