In my efforts to understand how ants defend themselves from slaver ants (must watch) - I imagined a fictional world where ants had many such capabilities.
In the multiverse and likely reflected in our world exists an ant colony known as the Polyarchia, ruled by a council of multiple queens, each overseeing different segments of the colony's sprawling underground network. This complex society evolved advanced capabilities, resembling human-like intelligence, communication, and strategic planning. Sadly the Polyarchia colony faces threats from a neighboring colony of parasitic ants, the Parasitus, which are known for invading and subjugating other ant colonies by enslaving and dominating their brood.
Polyarchia, a peace loving colony has several strategies for defense that focus on deterrence of violence without being caught in cycles of violence themselves - but rather continued peace.
Strategies:
"In the face of adversity, unity is strength. Through our collective strategies and resolve, we not only survive—we thrive." —Polyarchia Colony Creed
Deterrence Through Collective Defense
The Polyarchia has developed a sophisticated defense mechanism using cyrptographic pheromonal signals that are uniquely strong and repulsive to the Parasitus ants. This natural biochemical arsenal signals trust between the Polyarchia colony and acts as a deterrent, signaling a colony that is formidable and resistant to parasitic takeover.
"Our strength lies not in our isolation but in our connections. Each pheromonal signal we send is a message of our unyielding resolve and collective power." —An Elder of Polyarchia
Clear Defensive Protocols
Each segment of the colony, governed by its own queen, operates under a unified defensive protocol that dictates how workers and soldiers will respond to intruders. This distributed-ledger cyptographicaly verifiable protocol is designed to minimize internal confusion and ensure a coordinated, swift response to any Parasitus incursion.
Strategic Alliances
The Polyarchia ants form alliances with nearby non-hostile colonies. These alliances are cemented through the exchange of resources such as food and nesting space, creating a network of mutual support that strengthens regional stability and collective defense. Note that the infection or attack vectors that include economic imperialism are deterred by polycentric networks of commitment pools. Polyarchia ants utilize commitment pooling to strengthen their alliances with nearby colonies. This approach involves not only the exchange of resources but also a shared commitment to defend each other, creating a resilient network of mutual service that can quickly mobilize against common threats.
Proportionate Response
The Polyarchia's military strategy involves deploying soldier ants in numbers that are proportionate to the threat level. This controlled response helps avoid unnecessary skirmishes and preserves the colony's resources for potential larger threats.
"We measure our response not by the might we can unleash, but by the peace we can preserve." —Polyarchia Military Strategist
Investment in Non-military Strategies
Recognizing that warfare is costly, Polyarchia invests heavily in biological research to develop more potent pheromones and healthier and hardier brood, making them less susceptible to parasitic takeover. They also engage in cultural exchanges with other ant species to share and learn new defense techniques.
Adherence to Ethical Combat Codes
The Polyarchia adheres to an ethical code that prohibits the use of excessively aggressive tactics against other colonies, focusing instead on assimilation, education, defense and incapacitation of invaders without annihilation.
Early Detection and Conflict Prevention
The colony employs scout ants equipped with special sensory organs capable of detecting the unique pheromones of the Parasitus well before they reach critical zones. This early warning system allows Polyarchia to engage in preemptive measures to fortify vulnerable areas.
Public Education and Civic Engagement
The queens regularly communicate the importance of vigilance and unity to their brood through a series of rhythmic vibrations transmitted through the ground using cryptographic signatures for secure authentication. This form of public engagement ensures that every ant in the colony can trust the instructions and understands the threat and their role in the collective support and defense, fostering a strong communal resolve to maintain independence and peace.
"By fostering an environment of cooperation over conquest, we craft a future that values co-existence and peace. Polyarchia not only guards against external threats but also protects the very ground we walk on. Our commitment to environmental stewardship ensures that our practices support the health of our local ecosystem, making it sustainable for future generations of Polyarchia and our allies." —Polyarchia Queen Council
The Polyarchia not only defends its own habitat effectively but also contributes to regional stability, ensuring that it can thrive without resorting to the parasitic and aggressive expansionist tactics of the Parasitus. This imagined ant colony, with its human-like capabilities, epitomizes a society that balances strong defense with ethical governance and a commitment to peaceful coexistence.
I love this - as you know it is the living systems at play - there are so many similarities for us to pick up on and be able to utilise.. it also made me think of two short pieces I always get people to refer to in these times for our realisation ...

Brilliant, simply brilliant! I love how the original video says (at 01:30) "We are humanizing ants a bit for the story's sake" and yet, as you have shown, us humans have so much to learn from ants. Love it!
